SYNOPSIS of 2025 GMLD NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE
“From Import Dependency to Indigenous Solutions: Strengthening Nigeria’s Diagnostic Sovereignty”
Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported diagnostics has long posed a threat to health security, economic
stability, and emergency responsiveness. The COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing global supply chain
disruptions exposed vulnerabilities in the availability of essential in vitro diagnostics (IVDs),
reagents, and consumables. In Quarter 1, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a ₦10.3 billion
investment to promote local manufacturing of diagnostic kits and pharmaceuticals—marking a historic
shift toward diagnostic sovereignty.
The GMLD, as a critical private sector actor, must catalyze this momentum by bridging innovation,
policy, and entrepreneurship. This conference aims to serve as a strategic platform to co-create
solutions, identify scalable indigenous technologies, and align public-private partnerships (PPP) toward
sustainable diagnostic independence
